Kay Bailey Hutchison, born July 22, 1943 (age 68), is the senior Republican U.S. senator from Texas. She is the first female senator from Texas and has held office from 1993 to the present. Hutchison was a candidate for the 2010 Texas gubernatorial election, challenging incumbent, conservative Governor Rick Perry in the GOP primary, but was defeated.
Kay Bailey Hutchison is pro-choice regarding abortion, and has voted to express that Roe v. Wade was rightly decided and should not be overturned. [1] Additionally, Senator Hutchison is a strong and active proponent of stem cell research that involves the killing of human embryos. [2] However, Hutchison has voted for restrictions on abortion such as supporting the 2003 Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act.
Hutchison voted for the $700 billion Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP), leading Rick Perry supporters to call her "Kay Bailout Hutchison." Hutchison inserted 346 earmarks in the last two years spending bills costing $2.6 billion. [3]
